Senator Thom Daschle has pledged support for removing sanctions against India when President Bush consults Congress after the summer recess.
Daschle promised his support in a message to the chief of India Association of Siouxland, Dr Jagan Kaul, at an Independence Day function.
The improved relations between the United States and India, Daschle said, will help advance our common efforts to promote democracy, counter proliferation and fight terrorism.
The Senate majority leader pointed out that "since her Independence, India had developed into an influential member of the international community and a good friend of the US."
"Consistent with the policies of improving relations with India, it appears that Bush administration is slowly moving in the direction of lifting the 1998 sanctions against India, a move we can all support," he said.
Daschle added that while international goals of the US, including the fight against terrorism, are advanced by better relations with India, "our own country has also greatly benefited from the many contributions of the Indian-American community."
The message went on to say, "I join the voice of Indian-American community and the international community calling on Taleban regime to surrender Osama Bin Laden and stop use of Afghanistan as a base for terrorism."
