Opposition forces on Monday withdrew from the Kandahar airport to allow US planes to continue their bombing of Taliban positions.
The anti-Taliban forces claimed to have captured half of the airport on the outskirts of Kandahar city on Monday night but then encountered fierce resistance from the militia.
The troops have retreated to Uruzgan bridge, located about 2 km from the airport.
Ahmad Karzai, the brother of anti-Taliban tribal elder Hamid Karzai, meanwhile, claimed that his forces had captured Shah Wali Kot, a town some 15 km north of Kandahar.
