Woman to be deputy premier of Afghanistan

Various Afghan factions after a marathon ten-hour discussion on Wednesday agreed on Sima Samar -- a woman -- to hold the portfolio of deputy premiership in the proposed interim administration, a news agency reported.

She would also hold portfolio of the public health ministry, the report said.

The agreement between various Afghan factions on the composition of the interim administration, meeting in Bonn for a more than a week now, was reached after the United Nations envoy Lakhdar Brahimi intervened.

The administration will govern Afghanistan for six months, until the former king Zahir Shah convenes a traditional tribal council, or loya jirga.

The administration would comprise 29 members, culled from more than 150 candidates suggested by the four Afghan factions.

The Northern Alliance reportedly has retained the powerful defence, foreign and interior ministries.

Apart from Sima Samar, another woman, Suhaila Seddiqi has also been inducted as the health minister.

A signing ceremony is expected to take place on Wednesday night.
