Taliban surrender deal splits Alliance commanders

The surrender process is expected to commence on Friday.

Gul Agha, a former governor of the province, was upset at being left out of the negotiations between the Taliban and Hamid Karzai, who is to head the new interim government in Afghanistan, and another commander Mullah Naqibullah, who is to take over the city under the surrender deal.

Pointing to Mullah Naqibullah's earlier ties with the Taliban, Gul Agha has even threatened to take Kandahar by force if Naqibullah is allowed to take over Kandahar.

Gul Agha's forces have taken control of Kandahar airport after a fierce battle with Al Qaeda fighters.

Agha's outburst comes close in the heels of another dissenting voice in the form of ethnic Uzbek Abdul Rashid Dostum who said he would boycott the interim government complaining of being sidelined in the new set up.
