US drops 'daisy cutter' on Tora Bora cave complex

United States forces dropped a 'daisy cutter' -- the largest conventional weapon in their armoury -- on the Tora Bora cave complex in eastern Afghanistan, the Pentagon said on Monday.

The 15,000 lb bomb was dropped on the site based on reports that senior Al Qaeda leaders, including Osama bin Laden, were holed up in the area.

"The intended end state is to get the area and get the Al Qaeda leadership... because this has been their sanctuary ...," Rear Admiral John Stufflebeem said in a press briefing.

Stufflebeem said forces on the ground had not been able to assess the damage inflicted by the bomb because of the fighting on the ground.
