The United States said on Wednesday that a B-1 bomber, engaged in the air war over Afghanistan, had gone down in the Indian Ocean, 30 miles northeast of the island of Diego Garcia.
All four crewmembers were rescued, US military officials said.
Navy Captain Timothy Taylor, a Pentagon spokesman, said the crew was aboard the destroyer USS Russell, which was rushed to the scene after the crash.
"The cause of the accident is unknown at this time," the command said in a statement.
The B-1 is a long-range conventional bomber, capable of flying intercontinental missions at supersonic speeds and returning to bases in the US.
