US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has said that a relatively senior Taliban or Al Qaeda leader, who was wounded in Afghanistan, had been extracted and taken for medical treatment to another country by his supporters.
Rumsfeld did not name either the leader or the country he was supposedly taken to, but indicted there were some other such instances he was not aware of.
The secretary also said that his country was interested in talking to anyone -- Taliban or Al Qaeda -- who had information that could add to the US' knowledge of terrorist networks in Afghanistan or neighbouring countries.
"The US wants to talk to them to find out what they know about the patterns, procedure and training approaches of the various organisations," he said at a press conference on Tuesday.
