K J M Varma in Islamabad
Under relentless onslaught from United States warplanes and the opposition Northern Alliance, Taleban chief Mullah Mohammed Omar has agreed to leave his bastion Kandahar within 24 hours and hand over the city to non-Taleban Pashtoon leaders.
The Afghan Islamic Press said Omar took the decision to leave Kandahar and retreat into the mountains after days of consultations with his military commanders and close associates.
The report could not be independently confirmed.
American warplanes subjected Kandahar to one of the heaviest bombings since the air strikes on Afghanistan began on October 7.
Under a deal, Omar has agreed to leave Kandahar and turn the city over to two local Pashtoon leaders -- Mullah Naqibullah and Haji Basher, the Islamabad-based news agency said.
