G-21 for early meeting of all
Afghan factions

Dharam Shourie in the United Nations

The group of 21 countries on Afghanistan has called for an early meeting of all Afghan factions for a political solution acceptable to all, even as demands were made for the withdrawal of Pakistani, Arab and other foreign fighters from the war-ravaged country.

The proposed meeting of the Afghan factions would include former king Zahir Shah, the Northern Alliance and the Pashtoons, UN special envoy on Afghanistan Lakhdar Brahimi said.

Efforts were being made to revive the political process as fast as possible with "as many short cuts" as the Afghans would allow, he said.

Stressing on hastening the peace process, Brahimi warned that if more time was wasted in convening the meeting more problems might crop up, making progress difficult.

The G-21 also voiced concern over the presence of foreign elements in Afghanistan, including Arabs and Pakistanis.
