In an apparent attempt to deflect the criticism against the United States for its refusal to halt bombing of Afghanistan during the holy month of Ramzan, American Ambassador to Pakistan Wendy Chamberlin has said she is observing the dawn-to-dusk fast.
Disclosing this at an iftar party hosted by her for diplomats and journalists in Islamabad on Monday evening, Chamberlin said she was so impressed with the spirit of Ramzan that she decided to give up eating and drinking during the day for the entire month.
The Saudi Arabian ambassador to Pakistan was also invited to the party. Islamabad and Riyadh had insisted on a pause in the bombing raids during the holy month but the US turned it down citing operational reasons.
The US decision had given rise to considerable resentment in the country.
