Concerned about the fate of its citizens and officials fighting alongside the Taleban in Afghanistan, Pakistan -- America's frontline 'ally' in the war against terrorism -- on Monday said it had drawn the attention of the United Nations and International Committee of Red Cross about the fate of the hundreds of Taleban fighters who were reported to have been killed during an uprising in a prison camp near Mazar-e-Sharif.
Reports from Mazar-e-Sharif said most of the prisoners killed were foreign fighters, including a number of Pakistanis.
"We have maintained that all those people who have surrendered or are prisoners should be treated according to international laws," Pakistan Foreign Office spokesman Aziz Ahmad Khan told reporters in Islamabad.
"We have drawn the attention of the UN and ICRC to find out whether any Pakistani nationals were killed," he said.
Defence spokesman Rashid Qureshi, who was present in the briefing, said some United States bombs directed against the Taleban had hit Pakistani areas. "The coalition forces have been told to avoid such incidents," he said.
He also dismissed reports that stray bombs falling inside Pakistan could endanger Islamabad's nuclear programme. "None of Pakistan's nuclear weapons are stationed so close to the border," he said.
