Wiping out the last pockets of resistance, Northern Alliance forces retook the prison fortress of Qala-e-Jangi, where almost 450 pro-Taleban militiamen -- mainly Pakistanis, Arabs and Chechens -- revolted on Sunday night.
"We have subdued the last of those who were resisting this morning (Wednesday)," said Northern Alliance general Abdul Atif. "In total we killed 450. None wanted to surrender," he added.
An agency report substantiated the Northern Alliance claim and said its forces were in complete control of the sprawling fortress in northern Afghanistan.
The report said the facility -- the target of waves of US air strikes during the revolt -- was littered with bodies of the slain prisoners, burnt-out vehicles and shell casings.
