Johnny 'Mike' Spann is the first American known to have been killed in action inside Afghanistan since the United States-led bombing began, the CIA said.
CIA Director George J Tenet informed employees in the CIA's Washington office of the death of officer Johnny 'Mike' Spann in the prison riots.
Northern Alliance troops had brought the situation under control with the help of US special forces only after US jets pounded the Taleban positions.
Spann, 32, joined the CIA in June 1999 and had served in the Marine Corps. He is survived by his wife and three children.
Four Americans, all military personnel, have so far been killed in connection with the US campaign in Afghanistan. However, none of them died in combat situations.
