As the United Nations-sponsored Bonn conference was mulling the issue of a post-Taleban government in Afghanistan, Northern Alliance leader Burhanuddin Rabbani was trying to strike a deal with Pakistan to retain his power in Kabul.
Pakistan Foreign Office spokesman Aziz Ahmad Khan told reporters in Islamabad on Thursday that contacts had been established with Rabbani during his visit to Dubai.
He also invited the Northern Alliance leader to visit Pakistan, saying he was "welcome if he wishes to".
In Dubai, Rabbani announced that a number of Islamic states were preparing his personal meeting with Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf and had backed him on the formation of a 'transitional government' in Afghanistan till the convening of Loya Jirga (assembly of all tribal leaders).
