A Correspondent in New Delhi
Federal Bureau of Investigation agents spent the weekend in Hyderabad questioning the families of two Indian men detained in the United States in connection with the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington.
Intelligence sources said two FBI agents, in the presence of Intelligence Bureau officials, probed the background of Ayub Ali Khan and Mohammed Jaweed Azmath.
The probe centered on the background of the two Indians, and their financial transactions over the last decade.
Khan and Azmath, who were arrested while travelling on a train in Texas, did not have proper identification at the time.
At the time of their arrest, they were found in possession of a few thousand dollars in cash, besides items such as hair dye and box-cutters of the kind used by hijackers in the September 11 attacks.
Khan and Azmath have been living in the US for the better part of the decade.
IB officials have handed over to the FBI agents reports on the investigation done at their end thus far -- most of which have centered on false entries made in their passport applications by the two Indians.
Cases in this regard have been filed against both suspects in a Hyderabad court.
IB officials had earlier indicated that barring the passport violations, they have not found any links between the two Indians and any terrorist groups or activities.
