Sanjay Suri in London
Researchers have finally up dug up valuable evidence that Mahatma Gandhi indeed studied at the University College of London.
That he studied there was known, but now there is proof in the shape of a small card that has Mahatma Gandhi's name on it.
UCL Alumni Relations researchers have found an old card index box with Gandhi's name on it.
The card was updated on the day he was killed. His name was crossed out in red ink. Below it was written: 'Assassinated 30/1/48'.
It states Gandhi's full name, address in Bombay and dates of his attendance at the UCL.
"This has been a remarkable discovery," Patrick Edwards from the UCL told Indo-Asian News Service. "We now know (for sure) that Gandhi was a student of the university."
The discovery came after a determined investigation of the UCL's extensive archives. The researchers turned up the old card index box containing material evidence that the university had hoped for.
"We take many steps to track down and keep in touch with old students, but this case was the most exciting," Ruth Phibbs, head of the alumni relations at the UCL, said.
"The evidence that Gandhi studied at UCL is hand-written on a yellowing index card that clearly states his name and dates of attendance. It is signed by his academic tutor S K Mukerji," he said.
The last time the archive was disturbed was in 1948, when information of Gandhi's assassination was recorded in red ink, he added.
