Afghanistan's Northern Alliance on Friday said it was not going to wait for America's retribution strikes against the Taleban and would launch a major offensive against the militia on Saturday evening.
"We will not wait for the Americans to strike. Latest by Saturday evening we will launch an offensive against the Taleban on all fronts," Burhanuddin Rabbani government's Defence Minister Fahim Khan was quoted as saying by Russian state TV RTR.
The TV showed Khan inspecting his troops in new uniforms and columns of freshly painted Soviet designed tanks and armoured vehicles in the northern province of Takhar.
Each tank, truck and armoured vehicle had a coloured poster of assassinated opposition commander Ahmad Shah Masood on its hatch and windscreen.
Meanwhile, the Russian media said it believed that the US would launch its much-awaited strikes after October 10.
According to Izvestia daily during his Kremlin talks on Thursday, British Prime Minister Tony Blair had informed President Vladimir Putin about the date of the US strikes on Afghanistan.
