The foreign aid workers - two Americans, two Australians and four Germans - were taken into custody in early August along with 16 Afghan co-workers.
Earlier in the day, a Taleban foreign ministry statement said it would 'take steps' to release the aid workers if the US agreed not to target Afghanistan in its bid to bring Saudi exile Osama bin Laden, whom it suspects to be behind the September 11 bombings in New York and Washington DC, to justice.
A White House spokeswoman said, "The president has called for their release imperatively and without conditions."
