In a brazen attempt to stem the tide of anti-US protests in Pakistan, authorities have placed three prominent Muslim clerics under house arrest, according to CNN on Tuesday.
Maulana Fazal-ur Rehman, leader of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, Samiul Haq, the pro-Taleban leader of the Afghan Defense Council, and Azam Tariq, chief of Sipah-e-Sahaba were the leaders detained.
The report said that they have been put under house arrest to prevent them from organising more protests, amid speculation that the US is going to use Pakistani air bases for further strikes on Afghanistan.
Rehman had already been under house arrest for much of the past two days, when the detentions were announced.
The detention orders followed protests by more than 10,000 people in Quetta on Monday.
