US won't allow itself to be caught in Kashmir tangle: Jane's

India is concerned that the US-led war against global terrorism following the September 11 terrorist attacks on New York and Washington may 'sidestep' Pakistan-backed terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, Jane's Defence Weekly has reported.

Quoting unnamed US officials, the weekly said Washington would not allow itself to be caught in the Kashmir dispute.

"The Bush administration will focus on building its coalition against terrorism as a first step in a larger conflict, shifting its attention to the definition of terrorism and which groups fit such a definition at a later date," the officials told the weekly.

"The rules of engagement have changed with regard to Pakistan now that the US needs its help and guidance against Saudi dissident Osama bin Laden and his Taleban hosts ruling Afghanistan," the report quoted a foreign diplomat as saying.

The dispute between New Delhi and Islamabad over Kashmir, which was once considered a 'nuclear flashpoint' by Washington, has been relegated to the background as it is not 'expeditious' to raise it now, he said.

For the USA, Pakistan is now the frontline state in the war against terrorism, the report said.
