Taleban claims bus hit, 15 to 20 killed

The Taleban on Wednesday claimed that fresh US strikes on the southern city of Kandahar targeted a bus, killing or wounding 15 to 20 civilians, CNN reported.

The TV channel said the bus was hit in the town of Aghanbad, near the Taleban stronghold of Kandahar.

Meanwhile, fresh US strikes on Kabul targeted the mountains in the north of the Afghan capital, where many Taleban militia fighters are suspected to have taken refuge.

The mountains have been targeted for the first time, a demand that the Northern Alliance has been making from day one of the strikes.

Reports quoting eyewitnesses said that US jets also carried out attacks on Jalalabad

Elsewhere, reports said Taleban militia has launched a major counter offensive to the east of the key northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif in a bid to drive back opposition forces.

Speaking to an agency, senior opposition spokesman Mohammad Habeel said the Islamic militia was striking toward Marmul district and Shadian Gorge to the east and southeast of the city, capital of Balkh province near the border with Uzbekistan.

The counter-offensive, also reported by the Pakistan-based Afghan Islamic Press, came after the opposition claimed to have moved within five kilometres of the city's eastern edge.
