US ground troops enter Afghanistan: Official

A senior US official in Washington told CNN Friday that US troops have been deployed on the ground inside Afghanistan "consistent with the changing nature of the operation."

He said special forces troops, only a limited number, are carrying out intelligence and search and destroy operations in south Afghanistan.

He said the aim is to help the opposition Northern Alliance to penetrate deeper into areas held by the Taleban.

Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld on Thursday had said that air-raids could not accomplish all military goals and ground troops, at some point of time, would have to enter Afghanistan.

At a news conference with Chinese President Jiang Zemin, Bush declined to discuss details of the ongoing US-led military campaign. He specifically refused to answer when asked if US ground forces were now part of the operation.
