Musharraf asks US to conclude strikes, start peace efforts

Pakistan President Gen Pervez Musharraf has called upon the United States to conclude its military action in Afghanistan as soon as possible and initiate the process for establishing a broad-based government in Afghanistan.

Musharraf told visiting German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer that prolonged US-led military operations will aggravate the situation in Pakistan, Online news agency reported on Friday.

He said Pakistan wants that the US operation to be 'short, targeted and concluded in all swiftness. Pakistan feels extremely grieved over the killing of innocent citizens in the attacks'.

He told Fischer that the US raids in neighbouring Afghanistan had compounded problems for his country.

"Pakistan is suffering tremendously on the economic front," he said.

"Besides, the influx of Afghan refugees has taken on 'dangerous dimensions' and they need assistance," he added.

Musharraf called upon the world community to come forward to provide assistance to the refugees, adding that Pakistan alone could not bear the burden.

Coming to his pet theme, he said US Secretary of State Colin Powell has declared Kashmir as 'central' to Pakistan and India relations.

"The Kashmir issue has assumed an international dimension. Therefore, we want it to be resolved in accordance with the aspirations of Kashmiris," he said.

He said Pakistan needs a negotiated settlement of Kashmir and that countries like the US and Germany can play a pivotal role in easing tensions between Islamabad and New Delhi.

He made it clear that Pakistan is pursuing the policy of restraint on the frontiers but its forces are in a state of readiness to face aggression. "No one will be allowed to take mileage out of the situation," he warned.

Earlier during the meeting with Musharraf, Fischer praised Pakistan's efforts to eradicate international terrorism.

He said Germany would provide all possible assistance to Pakistan in alleviating its difficulties.

Both the leaders also discussed matters concerning the upcoming visit of German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder to Pakistan, India and China.
