M K Narayanan, former director of the Intelligence Bureau of India, is being made an honorary member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
It is an honour that has been bestowed upon heavyweights like US Secretary of State Colin Powell and Janet Reeno, former attorney general in the Bill Clinton administration.
Along with US Attorney General John Ashcroft, Narayanan would be the speaker at the week long 108th Annual IACP Conference starting at Toronto's Metro Convention Centre next Thursday.
Madras Joint Commissioner of Police K P Tripathi would also get a special recognition at the IACP banquet on October 31 for his outstanding work in community policing when he was the commissioner of police at Trichi.
Jayanto Chowdhury, counsellor at the Indian embassy in Washington DC told rediff.com: "We are very proud of the fact that Indian police officers are being recognised."
The fact that Narayanan is being given the honorary membership of IACP "is an unprecedented honour and it proves that Indian law enforcement has come of age".
