Pakistani authorities on Wednesday evening changed their stance over the entry of bodies of Harkat-ul-Mujahideen militants killed in Kabul in US raids into the country to avoid a confrontation with fundamentalists.
Anti-US protestors have been demanding that the killed militants be given a honourable funeral in Pakistan while authorities had been refusing to allow the bodies to be brought into the country from across the border.
Border guards prevented vehicles carrying the bodies of eight of the militants to enter the country saying they have instructions from higher authorities not to receive the bodies.
On learning about the government's decision, a crowd of 5000 people in Karachi who had gathered for the funeral prayers of the ultras turned violent.
Police had to open fire to disperse the angry demonstrators.
Seeing that situation deteriorating, late on Wednesday evening, authorities allowed the bodies in at the Torkham border post in the North West Frontier Province bordering Afghanistan.
