Sanjay Suri in London
The high-level committee on the Indian diaspora will submit a report on dual nationality to the government soon, High Commissioner for the United Kingdom Nareshwar Dayal announced in London.
"The report has been prepared by my predecessor L M Singhvi," Dayal announced at the Independence Day dinner hosted by the Kukhrain Biradari community on Tuesday.
Singhvi, who was India's high commissioner in London for seven years, is now chairman of the diaspora committee.
Singhvi has prepared his report after extensive meetings with leading non-resident Indians and persons of Indian origin worldwide.
"This demand has been pending for a long time," Dayal said at the Independence Day dinner. "But it now seems that we are near a decision."
The many guests present at the dinner welcomed the high commissioner's announcement.
He was answering a question raised by G S Sahni, president of the Kukhrain Biradari and former publisher of the Punjab Times newspaper.
"This demand has been pending for so long that I had stopped raising it," Sahni said. "But I am glad that some action is being taken now."
