Workers pull out 94 bodies out of WTC wreckage

The rescuers combing the wreckage of the collapsed World Trade Centre had pulled out at least 94 bodies, even as crews were working round-the-clock to cut through the crumbled steel structure to look for possible survivors.

New York Mayor Rudolph Guiliani said there were just 94 confirmed dead, even as his administration sought 6,000, body bags.

More than 2000 people were in hospitals and over 3,700 confirmed missing on the basis of call-in by families.

Estimates of casualties varied from a few thousand to several thousand, but officials said they might never be able to recover all the bodies, as several victims had been crushed under the weight of debris.

Even two days after the attack, Manhattan presented a deserted look. Only rescue and emergency vehicles were in the area. Thousands of family members of those missing were moving around in the area seeking information about their love ones.

Rescuers, who used torches to cut through the steel bars, were working non-stop, but smoke was still coming out the parts of the 110-twin towers, which collapsed after terrorists crashed passenger jet airliners in to them.
