Pakistan has asked the Taleban militia to hand over Saudi dissident Osama bin Laden for trial by appropriate authorities in keeping with the United Nations resolutions even as it told the United States that any decision to use force in Afghanistan should be mandated by the UN Security Council.
"We have conveyed this to the Afghan government. It is in the interest of the Afghan people that UNSC resolutions are implemented," Foreign Minister Abdul Sattar was quoted as saying by the state television.
The UN resolutions demand Taleban to hand over bin Laden to appropriate authorities to stand trial.
President Pervez Musharraf has also stressed that the US should take decisions in the light of the UN resolutions. "Our utmost desire is that the decision should be based on the principles of law and justice, which remain the cornerstone of our foreign policy. If there is a dire need to use force, it should be used under the UNSC mandate," Sattar said.
Referring to Pakistan's efforts to persuade Taleban to hand over bin Laden and the subsequent decision of Afghan Islamic clerics asking him to leave the country, Sattar said, "I think some progress has been made by the Afghan government. Afghans are fiercely independent and they do not accept any foreign intervention."
"The Ulema's decision asking Laden to leave the country is a miracle keeping in view the traditions of Afghans," Sattar added.
