Suman Guha Mozumder in New York
In a rare honour for a serving diplomat the Foreign Policy Association, one of the most prestigious non-profit organisations, has bestowed the FPA medal on Kamalesh Sharma, India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, in recognition of both his diplomatic and poetic attainments.
"Kamalesh Sharma has combined the best qualities of a great diplomat with those of a great poet to make this a better world for us all," Noel V Lateef, president of the FPA, said in his introductory remarks during the award-giving ceremony.
"We take great pride at the FPA in bestowing upon Kamalesh Sharma the Foreign Policy Association Medal," he said.
Lateef said that as a fellow of the FPA, Sharma has illuminated many FPA meetings with his insights and wisdom and thus furthered FPA's mission of promoting responsible internationalism.
Lateef remarked that Sharma's book, Imaging Tomorrow: Rethinking the Global Challenge, inspired and informed the FPA's World Leadership Forum last year.
Sharma, who has edited another book, Mille Fleurs, an anthology of poems from around the world, also received much praise for the work late last year.
"A great poet like a great diplomat can alter the way we see ourselves. He can change the way we see the world," Lateef said at the FPA event.
