A fire in the sewer systems caused six manholes near 34th St. and 6th Ave., in Midtown Manhattan, to explode Wednesday morning.
The location is one of Manhattan's most populated areas, with Macy's department store nearby on 34th and Broadway. One explosion took place close to the Empire State Building.
"At this point Con Edison (which supplies energy to New York) is on the scene and there are no injuries," the New York fire department press office said.
The explosion occurred at about 9:30 am.
Police have blocked Sixth Ave., between 33rd and 35th streets, and 34th St. between 5th and 6th Ave. Reportedly, some PATH trains have stopped running. But a policeman stationed at the intersection of 23rd and 6th Ave. said that the Long Island Rail Road trains are operating.
"There is no explosion just a small fire in (at least) three manholes," Joe Petta, a spokesperson for Con Edison said. "There is no power outage. We're making repairs now and we haven't heard of any one being hurt."
