Dil Hai Tumhaara centres around young, vibrant Shalu (Preity Zinta), who has the uncanny knack of getting into trouble. In total contrast is her gentle elder sister, Nimmi (Mahima Chaudhry).

No wonder then, it is the demure Nimmi who is their mother's (Rekha) favourite. Despite her partial attitude, the two sisters share a close bond.

Romance enters Shalu's life in rose-coloured hues when she falls in love with Dev (Arjun Rampal), who is equally attracted towards her. Unfortunately, Nimmi too falls for Dev. And then there is Samir (Jimmy Shergill), Shalu’s best friend, who is completely bonkers over her.

But their mother decides to get Nimmi married to Dev, despite knowing Shalu is interested in him.

The climax, of course, answers the eternal questions that haunt Hindi cinema -- Who gets Dev? Does Shalu ever get into her mother’s good books? What happens to Samir?
